Poem: On Beauty

Is beauty derived from the self or from others?
Would beauty cease to exist if no one sees it?
Or does anything genuinely beautiful need supplementing?

Is beauty improved by being praised?
Or damaged by contempt?
Will the sea be suddenly flawed if no one admires it?

Beautiful things and beings of any kind are beautiful in themselves and sufficient to themselves. Praise is extraneous. The object of praise remains what it was, no better and no worse. This applies, even to “beautiful” things in ordinary life, physical objects, and people.

And so the question changes.
Do you let yourself see how the waves playfully seduce you into spending time with them?
Or do you see only terrors and loss of control?
